ABU DHABI – The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security has announced the exemption of overstay fines for individuals unable to leave the country due to the recent regional airspace closure and suspension of several flights.
The decision follows exceptional circumstances that disrupted travel schedules and prevented passengers from departing on their planned dates. Authorities confirmed that the measure is aimed at ensuring affected individuals do not face financial penalties for delays beyond their control.
The exemption applies to fines incurred on or after 28 February 2026, offering immediate relief to travellers caught in the disruption.
Who is covered
The Authority clarified that the waiver extends to all individuals unable to depart as scheduled. This includes visitors holding visit visas, tourist visas, or exit permits, as well as residents who had cancelled their residency permits in preparation for departure.
By covering both short-term visitors and residents finalising their exit procedures, the decision addresses a wide spectrum of cases arising from the temporary airspace shutdown and subsequent flight cancellations or rescheduling.
Effective date
The exemption specifically covers fines accumulated from 28 February 2026 onwards. This ensures that individuals whose legal stay lapsed due to cancelled or postponed flights can regularise their status without incurring additional financial burdens.
Authorities emphasised that the move reflects a practical response to an evolving regional situation that directly impacted outbound travel, making it impossible for many to leave the country as planned.
Operational measures
The Authority confirmed that specialised teams at airports across the UAE and at Customer Happiness Centres remain fully operational. Efforts include handling cases linked to delayed or rescheduled flights, guiding individuals on visa status adjustments, and ensuring that necessary support services remain accessible during the disruption.
